IF your street starts to rumble as a team of motorbike riders pass by on Sunday morning don’t run for cover – they’ll be on a mission to help those less fortunate.

If you own a motorbike you could join them in the annual 2009 Mackay Toy Run, or take the kids to Magpies Sporting Club to watch the riders thunder through the gates and stay for a family fun day.

Mackay branch of the Ulysses Club, Mackay police and Magpies Sporting Club have joined forces this year for the fundraising Mackay Toy Run and Family Fun Day.

And they want anyone who is a part of any bike club or owns a set of two wheels to join in the fun and support our community.

“We are encouraging any bike club or bike that is registered for on the road to come and join us on Sunday,” Ulysses Club Mackay branch member and one of the organisers, Paul Smith, said.

“We would like to get as many bikes as possible so we are able to help as many local people as we can during what can be a tough time of year.

“It is nothing serious at all, it’s all for fun while putting something back into the community.

“Registrations open at 9.30am, at the PCYC, and riders will leave at 10.30am with a police escort,” Mr Smith said.

“The ride will take us through Slade Point, the City Heart, down Goldsmith Street, over the new hospital bridge and into Magpies Sporting Club.”

If you don’t own a motorbike there’s no need to worry about missing out on the excitement. Take the family and head to Magpies Sporting Club from 11am for the fun day. All that is required for entry is either a gold coin donation, a toy of any shape or size or a non-perishable food item. All proceeds will be donated to River of Life and St Vincent de Paul.

There will be a car show, bar, rides for the kids and, of course, the jolly man in red will also make an appearance.

Mr Smith has asked motorists using the road on Sunday morning to be mindful of the motorcyclists, especially at intersections.

IF you spotted the jolly fellow in red riding a three-wheeled motorbike around the streets of Mackay yesterday, your eyes weren’t playing tricks on you.

Santa, along with 200 other motorcyclists, thundered across our city’s streets yesterday morning, bringing neighbours and children out onto the pavement.

The 2009 Christmas Toy Run was one of the biggest yet for the Ulysses Club Mackay Branch, and member Ron Waters-Marsh praised the efforts of riders.

“It was an excellent day and we raised a lot of money for both River of Life and St Vincent de Paul charities,” Mr Waters-Marsh said.

“There were also a lot of wonderful toys donated of every shape and size, from games to fluffy toys. A huge thanks to the Mackay Traffic Branch police motorcyclist who led the ride.”

The ride wound through Slade Point, the City Heart and finished at Magpies Sporting Club just in time for the annual Family Fun Day.
